Appealing visual objects and data containers

Anyone who spends time in Japan can’t help but notice the prolific use of QR Codes, on packaging, in magazines, and anywhere where a connection to auxiliary information is required. We find these computer generated patterns fascinating, and became interested in using them for what they really are: both an appealing visual object and a data container. Emphasising the notions of beauty, mystery, multiplicity and randomness they naturally carry, we wanted the codes to become doors to magic boxes where we could store and share our collections and thoughts in a playful manner. As part of the process of exploring this idea we have created three books:

‘Ourbook’ is our first book (photographs right). It comprises of ten micro-blogs related to personal collections we contribute to on a daily basis. The collections include: lost toys, flowers, signs, typography etc.

‘Yourbook’ has a concept similar to ‘Ourbook’ in that it comprises collections, the main difference being that collections are open to contributions from each owner of the book.

‘QR³’ contains a story comprising 280 sentences, each illustrated by a picture. Every sentence, and the picture associated to it, is accessible through the QR Codes cut out of each page in the book. Since we are not able to read the QR Codes ourselves, and as the pages are indistinguishable, each ‘reading’ of the book becomes a random discovery – starting points are blurred as the story as a whole is explored from different angles.

魅力的な視覚オブジェクトとデータ保管庫

日本にいる誰もが、パッケージや雑誌など、補助的な情報へのアクセスが必要ならどこにでもついているQRコードの多彩な利用に気がつかずにはいられないでしょう。私たちにとってこれらのコンピュータが作り出したパターンは非常に興味深いもので、そのものをあるがままに使うことに関心を持ちました。つまり、魅力的な視覚オブジェクトとデータ保管庫として使用するということです。本来的にもっている美しさ、不思議さ、またその多様性、ランダム性といった概念を重視しながら、コードを、私たちのコレクションや考えをおもしろい方法で保管して共有することができる魔法の箱への扉のようにしたかったのです。このアイデアの追求の一部として３冊の本を作りました：

「Ourbook」は最初の本（右の写真）です。私たちが日々投稿する個人的なコレクションに関する１０個のマイクロ・ブログによって構成されています。なくなったおもちゃ、花、サイン、タイポグラフィーなどを含む様々な収集を載せています。

「Yourbook」はコレクションによって構成されているという点においては「Ourbook」と同じようなコンセプトですが、主な違いといえば、その中のコレクションは本の持ち主がそれぞれ投稿できるようにオープンになっています。

「QR²」にはそれぞれ絵が入った２８０文によって構成された物語が記載されています。全ての文とそれに関連している絵は本の各ページから切り取られているQRコードでアクセスができます。自分でQRコードが読み取ることはできないし、ページの区別がつかないので、毎回の「読書」は偶然の発見となり、話全体が異なった角度から探求されていくとともに話の始まりが曖昧になっていきます。
